12 Oktoberfest Beer and Food Pairings

    by Milena Perrine

O'zapft is, friends! Let's pair Oktoberfest food with all German beers.

First things first - what is Oktoberfest without Bavarian Soft Pretzels? Like these beauties made by Cathy at What Should I Make For...

Pair with: Weissbier, Dunkelweiss, Märzen, Pislner... pretty much all the German styles will shine next to these. And don't forget the mustard!

    Bavarian Soft Pretzels

Speaking about mustard, check out this Beer Mustard Crusted Pork Loin made by Rachelle, aka Beer Girl Cooks. Clearly she has cooked with craft beer before:)

Pair with: Schwarzbier (definitely!!), Märzen, Dunkel.

One of our favorite German eats ever is a crispy Traditional Pork Schnitzel, just like this mouthwatering foursome. Our friend Dawn at Girl Heart Food certainly knows how to use a mallet, even better - they are perfectly breaded!

Pair with: Pilsner, Helles, Märzen, Vienna lager, Dunkel.

On with the pork - these beautiful Porchetta Panini sandwiches are made by Loreto and Nicoletta from Sugar Love Spices. You have got to see the pork shoulder they prepared before it was sliced to assemble the panini (with crusty home baked bread).

Pair with: Märzen, Weissbier, Dunkelweiss, Dunkel.

Let's shift the attention towards the hind legs of the pig now, or rather - the pork knuckles. As the Germans say - Schweinshaxe. We prepared this ultra popular dish of the Bavarian beer halls using a recipe Chris used to work with about ten years ago.

Pair with: Märzen, Dunkel, Schwarzbier, Altbier, Dunkelweiss.

Switching gears to beef now with the Oktoberfest beer and food pairings. You have got to admire these succulent German Beef Rouladen, complete with a pickle! Apparently they are not difficult to make, our friend Jeniffer from Seasons and Suppers shows exactly how. Everything she makes looks this good. Promise.

Pair with:  Definitely Märzen and Vienna lager.

    German Beef Rouladen

Another very popular German beef dish is Sauerbraten and Jaxx, aka The Bearded Hiker nailed it. You won't believe the flavors going on in this German style pot roast.

Pair with: Märzen, Vienna lager, Dunkel and definitely Weissbier or Dunkelweiss.

Moving on to lighter fare (what, during Oktoberfest we always eat the very filling foods first and switch to lighter choices and dessert later:). This gorgeous Roast Beef with Beet Puree and Purple Cauliflower is prepared by our Belgian friend Sandra who blogs at Leeks and High Heels. She has expertly paired it with a Belgian pale ale (we agree) and also suggest that you consider to

    Pair with: Weissbier, Pilsner, Dunkel.

The bowls of sunshine below are made by Karrie from Tasty Ever After. Classic Kartoffelsuppe - German Potato Soup and she has made it even better by adding Wieners!

    Pair with: Märzen, Dunkelweiss.

Everyone is familiar with apples and cinnamon stuffed strudels. How about this Cheese and Cherry Strudel made by Goergie from the Homecook's Kitchen?  Such a fun twist on the classic flavor profile. It just so happens that it is perfect to

    Pair with: Märzen!!

Now that we have transitioned to the land of sweets, how about these German Chocolate Cake Cookies? Kelly from Kelly Lynns's Sweets and Treats has figured out a way to deliver the exact flavor profile of German choc cake, with way less work. Ahem, cookies:)

Pair with: Altbier, Dunkel, Dunkelweiss, Vienna lager, Märzen.

Now the grand finale:) This is what we call a cake like this one made by Kelsie from Itsy Bitsy Kitchen. A classic Bienenstitch, Bee Sting Cake with light pastry cream and drizzled with honey. The more beer you drink, the more of this cake you will crave.

Pair with: Altbier, Märzen, Dunkel, Dunkelweiss.

Definitely live in the present! A two weeks long present Oktoberfest. Maybe that is why they made it last for so long, lol. To limit the chances of nostalgia developing prematurely! We cannot wait for Chris' Altbier to be done and whip up a Bee Sting Cake. How pretty would it look with its cheerful colors on a dark Fall day?
