Cooking with Beer as an Ingredient
Cooking with beer can get any foodie out there excited about the endless possibilities. It is approachable and invigorating. It is always fun and rewarding. Beer is incredible for baking, braising, steaming, marinating, pickling, roasting, grilling… It makes batters airy and delicious, gives depth and flavor to sauces and reductions, makes deserts decadent and jams and glazes unpredictable…Beer simply adds another dimension to cooking.
Beer is food, it started that way. Centuries ago it was brewed by the same women who were baking the bread and doing all the cooking – the brew wives. Even earlier than that it literally was the food entire cultures consumed on a daily basis. There was little distinction between beer as a beverage and bread for example. Beer’s relationship with food is not only complimentary, it is often indispensable.
Cooking with Craft Beer: Our Recipes
We embraced cooking with beer early on in our craft beering adventure. The more we do it, the more we love it. From simple, several ingredient recipes to more complex ones, cooking with beer is an absolute joy – both the act and the final results. Not to mention the delicious aromas born in the kitchen while the beer and the food ingredients are interacting. For example, just a whiff of pork braising in a good German pilsner with some cumin transports me to my mother’s kitchen.
